About Tribe Zero-Waste
I’m Katie and, along with some lovely helpers, I run Tribe Zero-Waste pop-up events and plastic free deliveries around Oxfordshire and nearby counties.
I was motivated to start my personal zero-waste journey after working alongside East Oxford Social enterprise, SESI refill, when I was helping to manage local food co-op Cultivate. Following this, I helped set up some SESI detergent refill dispensers at The Mix, a community space in Wantage. It soon became clear the local community wanted to shop for food refills too!.
With help from Rina and Paul at SESI I set up a regular pop-up shop at The Mix and soon added pop-ups all over Oxfordshire.
Once the Covid-19 outbreak hit, we began offering a local delivery service, packaging all our our good in compostable and recyclable paper packaging or reusable tubs.
None of this would have been possible with the support and passion of all of our customers and host venues and I’m super grateful there’s so many of us helping to make change in our little bit of the world.
I try to keep the running of Tribe zero-waste as low-impact as possible at this scale. I prioritise stocking organic foods and work with local producers when I can.
Buying in bulk means I can help reduce the amount of packaging per item all of which I recycle or re-use. My bulk containers are up-cycled ice-cream tubs which I get from from a local farm attraction and my display jars have been collected by me and people I know. I’ve even managed to kit out our store room in second hand shelving and tables.
For home deliveries I have sourced recyclable and compostable paper bags and I’m now pleased to say we now have an electric van to do deliveries and market trips.
The next step in our journey is to open a refill shop in my home-town of Faringdon and offer people the chance to refill their own containers from our full range. Opening date TBA so stay tuned!
